Ice Cave
One of our two-night lodgings was the highly-rated guesthouse Volcano Hotel near Vik, operated by two local brothers and their wives. One brother, Johann, was our guide to the ice cave, and he and his wife Margrét cooked a fabulous dinner for us.

Transport to the ice cave was via "Arctic/Super Jeep". They're actually 12-passenger Ford vans on backcountry chassis. The tires start overland at 7psi and are bolted to the rims so they don't squish off. To gain traction on an especially slippery grade, Johann deflated them further to 2psi!
The ice cave is at the face of an outlet glacier in the Mýrdalsjökull ice cap. The ice cap covers active volcano Katla, which erupts every 40-80 years, last in 1918.
The cave is on private land that Johann said has been owned by the same family for 800 years.
