Friday - Passion Play Theater
After sightseeing and lunch, band and choirs gathered to rehearse in the famous Passion Play Theater. With a seating capacity of 4,600 and being open-air, the theater was far too large and chilly for the evening’s concert. However, rehearsing in this world-famous location was a unique experience for all the musicians.
The Passion Play dates from 1634. “In 1633, the residents of Oberammergau, Bavaria, Germany, vowed that if God spared them from the bubonic plague ravaging the region, they would produce a play thereafter for all time every 10 years depicting the life and death of Jesus.” The production involves over 2,000 actors, musicians and support staff – all of whom are village residents.
